Spongebob edgy parody dubs
This post discusses mature topics and references material that contains obscene language. Reader discretion is advised.
greenday12688 was a channel ran by a collective of artists (or something like that) who made voiceover dubs of children’s Nickelodeon cartoons - i mean, greenday12688 was probably just one guy who was a fan of Green Day that uploaded the videos. They started making videos in 2007, making three parodies of SpongeBob Square Pants and one of Hey Arnold, as far as any documentation goes, these were the only videos made for this channel - rumors are that these circulated before 2007 on other sites, but considering the age of the uploader (him being 19 by the time he uploaded them in 2007) i really doubt it’d be much older.
That dub spawned a subculture of Edited SpongeBob, where a lot of kids put swears from that clip over a spongebob episode - but that has little to do with the topic at hand - i just wanted to let you know…
greenday12688 was taken down by Paramount (then Viacom) on YouTube shortly after for copyright violations, with the people who used to make the parody dubs forming the band Kirk Fogg’s African Adventure, a grindcore band that made a lot of dick jokes - The guy who voiced SpongeBob does some vocals, though I’m not sure who he is? the band has 4 vocalists - they weren’t mainstream but they got around in the scene, even opening for Andrew Wk! He made the “Ready to Die” song from that MLP video, if you’re not aware.
Their Grandma’s Kisses voiceover, named “Grandma’s Kisses-Bad Version”, was by far their most popular work. The jokes made in those videos where crude, and involved a lot of shit, fuck, and ball sack - they were massively successful, being used as a source for the YouTube Poop “Sexer” and was later sampled by 100 gecs in their song One Million Dollars - the videos also are the origin of the widely-used “I got a boner” YTP SFX.
The jokes are pretty juvenile and very… outdated, to say the least. I think there’s still a charm to them all these years later. When I was younger I remember recording similar videos with myself and showing it to my friends, and there was this youthful innocence to it, which i think this video shares, even if the videos are comprised of penis and tits jokes…
It’s awesome how anyone can have a cultural impact, even these guys, though it was definitely easier back when the internet was small… pretty cool how fandubs are having a comeback with SnapCube, though considering how massive DBZ abridged, was it ever really gone?
